Christmas Jars: A Great Tradition (Jeffrey Utupo)

Dear Mr. Jason F. Wright,

The deep story behind Christmas jars is a very uplifting, inspirational and exciting. We need more people like the Maxwell family in the world today. It gives me a lot of hope to know that there is still a bit of good in the world today. The spirit of Christmas is truly giving and your story is a great example of how Christmas should really be spent. The story of Hope Jensen and the Maxwell family is one that the whole world should hear about and take part of. My English project was to take a book I have been reading for the last semester and write about how it has changed me. And I believe that this story has definitely changed the way I view the world and especially myself. I think it is ironic how the book Christmas Jars was the book I was reading this semester because it fits right into the topic.
Most people think of Christmas as exciting, and that is great and all but I think they are excited for all the wrong reasons. The world we live in today has transformed the true meaning of Christmas by making it more materialistic. But the Maxwell family still holds on to the true meaning of Christmas. It is heart-warming to know how their tradition started when Lauren was going to the bank to turn in all her saved coins to buy a present when she saw a lonely lady sitting on the curb and she gave away all her Christmas money to her. And ever since then, the only way to go was up. I learned myself that you do not need the materials things in life because true happiness comes from the heart. And when you do something good your heart feels good and you feel good about yourself. Also another example I learned from the book is that one person can start a huge thing if you do your part even if you do not see direct results. The Maxwell family started small with the tradition of saving change in a jar throughout the year and giving it away at Christmas time and by the end they themselves received hundreds of jars when their father passed. So if I put my mind to it and never doubt myself I can be the spark that starts a fire. Another thing I learned was something as little as a jar full of coins on the worse day ever or a random act of kindness can change the life of everyone.
If I had to choose a book that could change the way people view this world I would definitely choose Christmas Jars. In a world where everywhere you look something bad is going on or just something is not right, I know that the tradition of Christmas jars is alive and people around the world are receiving random jars full of money on days where they just feel like giving up. But I believe that the main point behind this story is that it does not have to be money. You can just crack a smile when you see someone and that could just make their day or maybe just help your neighbor with yard work but whatever it is just know that anything can help and everything is possible.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Utupo
